5th Grade Picnic Update

Good Morning!

Can you believe that we are already in the second to last week of school?! I find it hard to believe, but then again this is only my 5th week back ;) Thank you all so much for the well-wishes while I was out with my ankle, I truly appreciate it! It is great to be back and I loved seeing all of the kids' smiling faces, both at the basketball game and on my first day.

One quick housekeeping item. As 5th grade teachers from all three elementary schools, we decided to postpone the picnic to our rain date of this Thursday, June 5. We felt that, due to the forecast of thunderstorms on Wednesday, it would be better for all to push it back a day to a much sunnier Thursday. We are all still excited to meet other 5th graders before the journey to JLMS. If you chose to have the school provide a lunch, you do not have to worry about contacting anyone. We have taken the responsibility of contacting food services and they are aware that we will need the lunches for Thursday. If you planned on packing a lunch, please send a pack lunch on Thursday.

Happy Tuesday!

2nd Grade Buddies and Holiday Program

This week we had 2nd grade buddies. We played games and had COOKIES!  It was a really fun way to celebrate the holidays with our buddies. Plus it was a really nice way to learn a little about our buddies.

In our Holiday Program, Shine Your Light, we used black lights and had really cool special effects to enhance our singing. I really liked when the 2nd and 3rd graders performed Sleigh Ride with white gloves in the black light. It looked really cool to see only hands floating in the air!

Veteran's Day Celebration 4th and 5th Grade

Veteran's day at Kennedy school is a great chance to learn about real live veterans up close and personal.  You can learn so much! like what it was like to be in a war or battle. One of the veterans had a story about an orphanage. They had no running water at the orphanage so they would have to send two kids to get water from a well. When the vet came he saw the kids carrying the water and helped them. And kept coming back to help them. And one of the times he saw a little girl in one corner of the room and said "Lati! Lati!" which means come here come here. When the little girl didn't come to him he came to her and eventually when he came again she was just waiting for him, so when he said "Lati! Lati!" she would run over him and sit on his knee.

November?!

We've had an eventful couple of days! Yesterday, we were able to meet with our 2nd grade buddies for a second time. We helped them put on their costumes if they needed it and then read some Halloween and Fall books while snacking on cookies. The 5th graders really enjoy spending time with their buddies!

In math we started working with volume and exploring rectangular prisms. We have been giving the kids a volume and they would then have to construct a rectangular prism that has that volume. We have been working with base-ten ones blocks, and they have really picked up on the concept of volume!

It has been very encouraging to see how well a lot of kids are doing with the math program, especially when they are able to tell us all of the "math" behind what they are learning.

In science, I like to do as much hands-on activities as I can. Unfortunately, the science units that I teach aren't very friendly with my hands-on approach. Right now, we are studying space. If I could give them a planet, a star, or a Mars Rover to hold and study, I would do so in a heartbeat. As you know, that isn't possible. So, I've supplemented with other things. We've been working with the new iPads our school received to study space. Below, the kids are completing an AppWalk through a variety of space related apps. If you are interested in any of the apps, let me or your child know! All the ones I have the kids explore are free and wonderful! :)

It's already November. My, how time flies! Have a great weekend!

Quick Note About Conferences

Conferences are upon us! I told all the kids today (after an unexpected absence yesterday) that they are all more than welcome to come to their conferences, that I actually ENCOURAGE them to come with parents or guardians so that we are all on the same page. I truly believe that it will be valuable for your child to hear what we all have to say during their conference. If possible, have them come with! I look forward to meeting everyone!
